One of the themes in the book is family.  Caelum struggles with the idea that his family may not be who he thinks they are.  He discovers that the woman who raised him as her own is not his biological mother.  His real mom actually drowned in a nearby lake.  She had earlier kidnapped him for a day, causing his family lots of distress.  After Caelum discovered who his real mother was, he struggled with the thought of who his father was.  Battling the idea that he might not be a Quirk, he does a blood test which proves that he really is his father’s child.  He is glad for this fact, yet he is upset about why Lolly hid so much from him.  Maureen tells Caelum it was to protect him, yet he just feels betrayed and doesn’t know who he can trust to tell him the truth.  Later on in the story, two infant’s bodies are discovered, which opens up a whole other box of questions.  He finally gets his answers about who the babies are, but this discovery and the lies he was told as a child have shook him to his core.  He confides in Maureen when he visits her at the prison, asking her what he should do about it all.  When Janice is writing down his ancestor’s history, Caelum is relieved to find out that he was related to this powerful and influencial woman whose life Janice is documenting. But my mom picked it for book club and it had been long enough since I read it that I felt I needed to read it again. LMAO!! 3 likes. It's not a book to expect a happy ending from, it was actually more heartbreaking than I had anticipated. Having had several divorces, Caelum has relied on people like Lolly to be his family through it all.  The idea of Lolly not being his blood relative scares Caelum, making him question all his other ties.  The facts come out that he was lied to about some things, but that his strongest ties were with people that were his real family.  I think, though, that family doesn’t always have to be by blood.  For example, look at Velvet.  She is not related to Caelum or Maureen, yet they are the closest things she has to a family.  They become her support group and the people she confides in the most. A psychological illness like PTSD can follow any traumatic event, whether it be a rape, natural disaster, shooting, death of a loved one, or time on the battlefield.  The symptoms can drastically alter your life and keep you from doing your everyday things like socializing and holding down a job.  Illnesses like these are not something that an individual can just ignore.  It is scary, controlling, and real.  If the person doesn’t get help, the illness can worsen to a point where they have lost all control of their emotions and actions.  Maureen lost control when she fell into that drug addiction.  The drugs took over her life, she feeling as though using was okay as long as she kept it a secret.  There comes a point, though, where you can no longer hide your secrets, you lies, and your wrongdoings.
